Stanford Mini Rugby Section went to Eton Manor Festival on Sunday, and performed with great credit.
The under 6’s entered their first ever Festival, and came away with the winners’ trophy! In their first match, they drew 25-25 with Eton Manor. Scorers were: Sam Moran 2, Daniel McAllister, Alfie Drum and Robin Hughes. Their second match was against Chingford, and Stanford won 35-25. Try scorers were: Robin Hughes 3, Christian Wood 2, Alfie Drum and Harry Taylor. This meant that Stanford were the winners on try count. Congratulations to the team and coach John Taylor.
The under 8’s started well, with a one-sided 30-10 win over Ilford. Try scorers were: Dominic McDonald 3, Sean Bunney, George Taylor and James Kitchen. In their second game they were put under pressure by Medway, who went on to win 30-15. Scorers for Stanford were: James Kitchen 2 and Daniel O’Flaherty. In their final pool match, Stanford overcame a very good Eton Manor ‘A’ team by 30-15, with one of the best performances of the season. Scorers were Dan O’Flaherty 2, Dominic McDonald 2, Jacob Dennis and George Taylor. This meant they had reached the Semi-Finals, where they met Eton Manor ‘B’. Stanford were doing well until they turned the ball over to their opponents just before half-time, when pressing their line. They went into the second half trailing 15-5, and could not recover, eventually losing 30-10. George Taylor scored Stanford’s two tries.
A joint under 9 and under 10 team entered a tough under 10 competition, and had a mixed tournament. They played four games winning just one, against Harlow. First game was against Eton Manor, and Stanford lost an entertaining game by 25-10. Next was a 15-5 loss to Ilford, then a 25-10 loss to Chingford, after being 10-10 at half time! The last game was a win by 25-20 against Harlow. In this game Stanford were 20-0 up at half time and Harlow came back strongly to 20-20. A last minute try just won it for Stanford. The try scorers for Stanford were Nathan Hickey (9 tries!) and Jamie Lake (1). It was a fun day out and a good way to finish the season.
The under 11 side had a tough day against quality opposition. In their first match they came up against Barking and lost 15-0. The second match was a well contested match against Brentwood, and ended 0-0. Their last game ended with a narrow 5-0 defeat by Medway, after a hotly contested try at the end of the second half.
The under 12’s started with a 0-15 loss against a strong Eton Manor side. They beat Thurrock 10-5, with Luke Hawkes and Daniel Sullivan the try-scorers. They drew 5-5 with Ilford, with a try from Luke Hawkes, and then went on to thrash Old Ignations 40-0 in their last pool match to qualify for the Semi-Final. Scorers were: Ben Street 2, Dean O’Connell 2, Sean Matthews 2, Jack Payne and Jordan Harper. Stanford met Barking in what proved to be a very tight Semi-Final, full-time ending with no score. Barking just shaded the game, with a try from the last phase of extra time. Emily Scott played her last game for Stanford, as she will be playing women’s rugby next season. Coach Gareth Harper said “The players had a great Festival, and played their best rugby of the season. Emily will be sorely missed as a captain and as a player, after a superb season.”
This was a very promising end to the season, and bodes well for next season.
Anyone interested in playing for Stanford Minis are welcome to come down to the club on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m.
