Stanford U13’s played Upminster at Stanford Rec on Sunday. Upminster dominated the first ten minutes of play and scored 21 unanswered points. From the restart of the third try, Stanford came into the game, enabling Danny Sullivan to score from a well worked backs move. The next try was scored by Jack Payne under the posts and Jordan Harper converted.

In the second half, Stanford dominated, scoring a further three tries through Jack Payne, Danny Sullivan and Rhys Smith-Allen, Jordan Harper converting two. Upminster scored one more try, but Stanford ran winners by 31-26. Stanford played some excellent rugby with good support play from the forwards linking with the backs. A special mention should go to James George for his excellent tackling.

Stanford Minis fared well against visitors Harlow on Sunday, winning five and drawing one of the six matches.

Stanford U12’s played below their best, but still managed to carve out a win against a good Harlow side and extend their unbeaten run to 6 games. The home side were slow out of the blocks and got caught cold by a good early try, which seemed to be the wake up call that they needed. Flying winger Jay Ingle ran in two good tries, Jamie Douglas scored his second hat trick in as many games and Joe Meadows and Jake Barrand joined in with a try apiece for Stanford to win 35-10. The under 12 side are now unbeaten in their last six matches. Player of the day was Jay Ingle.

Stanford U11’s played a physical and aggressive Harlow side and pulled off a superb win. With just the bare 12 players Stanford bravely attacked from the start and they were rewarded with an excellent team try finished off confidently by Alice Wright. Harlow replied with a try but Stanford came back again with a score from Jamie Lake sprinting down a very tight touchline. Harlow then took control and powered over with a good try, breaking several Stanford tackles. Both teams had agreed to take conversion kicks after each try and Stanford had successfully kicked both theirs and Harlow just getting one, so the score at half-time was 17-14 to Harlow.

In the second half, Stanford’s outside half Nathan Hickey scored to take the lead and Jamie Lake converted his third kick of the day. Harlow came to life again and hit back with a converted try to make it 24-21 and it looked like Stanford were beaten, but a strong forward drive from a lineout and good handling saw Stanford crossing the line for a fourth time, and captain James Brown crashed over to score. Jamie Lake stepped up to kick again and the result was the same, straight though the uprights to make it 4/4! The final score was Stanford 28 - Harlow 24.

Stanford U9’s agreed to play 3 ten minute periods to give all squad members a chance to play, and came out on top by 13 tries to 6 against Harlow, for a final score of 65-30. Pace was the difference between the sides, together with some good team-work in a very entertaining match. Scorers were: James Kitchen 4, Dominic McDonald 3, Dan O’Flaherty 3, George Taylor 2 and Louis Webb. Some of the newer players to the squad played well and special mention should go to Connor Gillam, with some great powerful runs and Sean Bunney for some unselfish and skilful offloads.

Stanford U7’s played three games against Harlow, drawing the first 10-10, winning the second 20-10 and the third 25-10. Scorers were: Harry Taylor 3, Sam Moran 2, Liam Brunger 2, Robin Hughes, Jamie Gray, Alfie Drum and Ryan Bunney.

The Stanford youth sides seem to be coming to the boil at the right stage of the season, with the Festivals coming up soon.

Next week Stanford Minis travel up the A128 to take on Brentwood Minis and Upminster.
