Basildon Minis travelled to Stanford on a dry, overcast Sunday morning.

Stanford under 13’s came off second best against a talented and well-drilled Braintree side and despite a valiant team effort by Stanford, the game ended 48-0 to the visiting side.

Stanford under 12’s played Basildon A in a very close match, with Bradley Burrows and Jay Ingle scoring for Stanford. In the closing moments, the score was level at 10-10, only for Basildon to score with the last move of the game to win 15-10. They then had a good 25-0 win against Basildon B, with tries from Jay Ingle, Ryan Goulding-Thomas, Jake Barrand 2 and Jamie Douglas. Player of the day was Jack Scott, who fielded high kicks well and produced some good runs.

Stanford under 11’s had to borrow players to fulfil the fixture. The game was a 10 a side affair and the Stanford forwards were dominant in this hard fought match. Scrum half James Brown scored an early try with Jamie Lake converting the score. Fly Half Nathan Hickey then scored two tries, cutting the Basildon backs to shreds with his direct and determined running. At half time it was 17-0 to Stanford. Basildon fought back with passion in the second half and their forwards manufactured a good try after being held up several times by the Stanford defence. It was Stanford who had the last word and James Brown dodged past his opposite number to score after a line out. Jamie Lake again converted the try. Final score was Stanford 24 Basildon 7. Coach Dave Payne thanked Basildon for sportingly lending Stanford players to make equal numbers in both games.

Stanford under 10’s had a closely fought game against Basildon. Stanford scored with a breakaway try from Centre Alex Mayger but Basildon came back strongly to take a half time lead of 5-10. From the kick off Stanford made good progress and worked the blind side, and Lewis Brunger made a long touchline run to bring the scores even at 10-10. The Basildon team again came back and scored a try from a line out near the Stanford try line. Final score Basildon 15 Stanford 10. An excellent game, played in good spirit.

Stanford under 9’s played twice against their Basildon counterparts, and won both matches. It was a gritty, determined performance by the home side, with heavy tackles flying in from both sides. In the first match, the home side were victorious by 15-0, with tries by Dominic McDonald (2) and James Kitchen. In the second encounter, James Kitchen scored twice and Sean Bunney, Connor Gillam and Captain Dominic McDonald also went over, for Stanford to triumph 25-5. Coach Kyran said it was “…an excellent performance from everyone, the re-cycling and passing was a joy to watch.”

Stanford under 8’s won their home debut against Basildon with a good solid display of passing and running rugby. Bradley Oakley scored Stanford’s first try with Captain Dan O’Flaherty scoring a hat-trick and Josh Goshmanski also touching down. Basildon also scored twice, but Stanford eventually triumphed by 25-10. Coach Tony Goshmanski congratulated the lads on a very good performance, especially considering the age group had only been formed three weeks ago.

Stanford under 7’s had a great result, winning 35-15, with some strong running by the home side. Scorers were Sam Moran 2, Robin Hughes 2, Albert Aldeham 2 and Sam Edgar. Coach John Taylor said he was proud of the boys, and that he was sad to be passing the boys on to their Coach for next season, Andy Lennox, but pleased to be taking charge of the present under 6’s next season.

Stanford under 6’s had a training match and just lost out to Basildon by 20-25. Scorers were James Hutchinson and Alfie Drum 3.

Stanford Rugby Club’s Mini & Junior Section are now going from strength to strength, regularly fielding all eight age groups from under 6 to under 13, having only fulfilled five age groups last season. Anyone wishing to play is welcome at Stanford Rec on Sunday mornings at 10 o’clock.

Next week is Easter and the teams are having a welcome break. The following week Stanford Minis are all on Tour in Norfolk. Good luck to all on tour.
