The Stanford under 12’s were a player short for the Essex Festival at Westcliff on Sunday. In their first match they came up against a tough Woodford side and were beaten 20-0.
In their second match, good work by the forwards saw Jamie Douglas go over the try-line. Jake Barrand then scored from a quickly taken tap penalty for Stanford to beat Burnham 10-0.
Local rivals Thurrock scored first in Stanford’s third and final game, but Stanford came back with a try from Jay Ingle. Thurrock then scored a breakaway try to win the game 10-5. Eleven man Stanford were unlucky to lose in this tense derby match.
Stanford U10’s had mixed results in the Essex Festival. Playing with just 8 players in each match and using two U11 players in each match as permitted by the RFU they were also a player down, so the Stanford youngsters had a tough afternoon of rugby.
The first game saw a drubbing by a very strong Woodford team 0-30.
To Stanford’s credit they came back strongly in their second game taking on the Wideford Lodge Prep School and winning 15-5. The scorers were Prop Geoff Smith and Outside Half Mark Sullivan (2 tries).
The third and final game of the pool matches was against our nearest neighbours Thurrock, and it was in this match they played their best rugby winning 20-10. The scorers were Centre James Brown and Outside Half Jamie Lake (3 tries).
Stanford progressed to the plate semi final, coming second in their pool, and faced Chingford. Stanford caught Chingford cold at the start of the game and took an early two try lead with tries by Mark Sullivan. However Chingford came back strongly and were level at half time. The second half was a real battle and unfortunately Chingford proved to be the more organised and scored two more unanswered tries to make the final score 10-20 to Chingford.
Considering both teams were playing one short it was a great effort by the Stanford teams.
A big thank you to all the parents who supported the children and coaches at the event. Well done everyone!
