Stanford went to Barking Rugby Club for their first ever Essex Championships, and enjoyed a successful day.
The under 8’s squad played some scintillating rugby on the way to their final.
Their first pool match was against local rivals Basildon, and they produced a tremendous performance, especially in defence, to win 15-10, with 2 tries from Dominic McDonald and 1 from James Kitchen.
They then faced another local rival in Thurrock. Stanford played probably their best ever, to lead 25-0 at half-time, with 4 tries from George Taylor, 2 from Dominic McDonald and 1 from Ryan Quinn, the game ending 35-10.
The final group match against hosts Barking proved to be the group decider, and what a cracker it was. Stanford led early on, with tries by captain Dominic McDonald, George Taylor and James Kitchen, but Barking came back to level at the end, to draw 15-15. This meant Stanford were group winners and qualified for the final.
The final was a tense affair, and with tries by Sean Bunney, Dominic McDonald and James Kitchen before the break, were level 15-15 with Eton Manor at the interval. After the break, Stanford put the pressure on, but were punished for handling errors close to Eton Manor’s line, with their opponents taking the lead 30-15 with breakaway tries. Dominic McDonald gave his side hope with another touchdown, but Eton Manor ran out as worthy champions, with the game ending 40-20.
Congratulations to Stanford under 8’s on great teamwork throughout the day.
Stanford under 9’s had a reasonable tournament, winning two and losing two. In their first match they were unlucky to lose to Basildon 5-0. They then overcame Southend 10-5, with tries from James Brown and Jamie Lake. They were beaten 5-15 by a powerful Barking outfit, with Richard Spurrow scoring. They enjoyed a good result in their final group match by beating Rochford 25-10. Tries came from Jamie Lake (2), James Brown, Richard Spurrow and Joe.
The under 11 side had a mixed tournament, starting with a 0-0 draw against Thurrock and a 5-5 draw with Eton Manor. They then beat Basildon 10-5, before coming up against strong opposition in Chelmsford, who beat Stanford 15-5, and Romford, who triumphed 15-0.
Stanford under 12's started well by beating Rochford 5-0. Barking and Brentwood then proved too strong, and both games resulted in 20-0 losses. They lost a tight match against Chelmsford 10-15
Stanford Minis are on tour to Hastings this weekend, with an away match against Ilford on Sunday 18th April.
