Stanford Mini-Section hosted Ilford Wanderers on Sunday, and had an enjoyable morning’s rugby.
Ilford under 8’s turned up with only 5 players, so they borrowed Stanford players James Kitchen and Daniel O’Flaherty. In the rain, Stanford lost the first game 25-35 and the second 20-35. Stanford’s passing game was not at it’s best, but Ilford’s strong runners were the difference between the sides. The scorers for Stanford were: Dominic McDonald 6, Jacob Dennis 2 and George Taylor. James Kitchen scored 4 tries in a strong running performance for Ilford, while Dominic McDonald gave a sidestepping demonstration and great support work for Stanford.
A mixed U9/10 Stanford team took on an Ilford U10 team in wet and windy conditions and came out on top. Ilford arrived with just 7 players but Stanford gave them 2 players to play a competitive and exciting game of rugby at the rec. Probably the difference between the two teams was the outstanding pace of Nathan Hickey who ran in four long range tries on the wing. Stanford’s other scorer was James Brown at Centre. There was plenty of tackling to do and captain Sophie Young and scrum half Carla Harper were up to the task. Liam Blackman, a Stanford player who played for Ilford, scored a superb forwards try to bring Ilford to within one score. The full time score was Stanford 25 Ilford 20.
The U11 side put up a brave performance, but were overpowered by a strong Ilford side. The final score was Stanford 0 Ilford 15.
The U12 side had a confident win, beating Ilford 40-0. There were strong performances from all the players, with some excellent finishing from Kieron Ferguson. Try scorers were: Kieron Ferguson 4 with Luke Hawkes, Emily Scott, Dean O’Connell and Jordan Harper 1 each.
The next two games are on Sunday 16th November against Basildon, and Sunday 7th December against Westcliff, both games at home at 10 am. New players between the ages of 5 and 12 are very welcome, just turn up at Stanford Rec at 10am on Sundays.
