Why not try the Rugbyclass held at Campion, Hornchurch 22-26 August?
We already have players booked in for this year after enjoying last season.

On Sunday 17th July, Stanford Rugby
Club’s Mini Section held a Fun Day for their members and families at
the Rec, and for once the weather was perfect.
Over 200 children
and parents enjoyed such activities as sack races, bouncy castle and the soak
the coach event, which was very popular. Head Coach Kyran McDonald bore the
brunt of the soaking from the players, with under 7 Coaches John Taylor and John
Drum also getting a severe drenching. The tug of war competition was also very
enjoyable, with most of the Mums, Dads and children taking part and even some of
the Grandparents! On such a sunny day the barbeque was also very popular. Many
thanks go to all the volunteers who got involved in the day.
It was a great way
to spend a sunny summer’s afternoon and all the parents and players got to know
each other better. With the Mini Section now running 8 squads ranging from under
7 to under 14 with over 100 children on the books and a new clubhouse imminent,
everyone is looking forward to the new season in September.
We take player
safety very seriously and our focus is on building team work, fitness and
technical skill. But above all we aim to make playing rugby fun for both players
and parents.
Each team is coached
by experienced RFU qualified coaches, all of whom have undergone the necessary
checks to coach children. Most of the coaches are past and present players of
the club.
Success on the field
last season saw Stanford Minis get teams to the semi-finals of the Essex
Championship and win several trophies in festivals throughout
Essex and East
London, major successes for a small club.
Rugby
will make youngsters fit, give social skills and help make some good life-long
friends with a common interest. Come along to
Stanford Rugby Club at the
Rec on
Billet Lane
each Sunday at
10am
and become a part of something good in the area

Welcome to the Website of Stanford Rugby Football Club Minis. Whether you are a present Club member or interested in joining the club as a player or a social member, this site will give you all of the information that you need. Stanford RUFC was formed in 1975 by Ted & Bert Higgs [now President & Chairman respectively] & Welshman Mark Thomas after leaving Thames Boardmills. Stanford played for several years without a clubhouse until 1980 when lock Brian Hattershank donated a barn in his back yard that backed on to the pitch. In 1988 Stanford moved to the present clubhouse. The club is proud to boast a thriving minis and youth section and the young players enjoy top quality coaching and support from all sections of the club, with the emphasis on inclusion and enjoyment and not winning at all costs. The Club are hopeful that a new clubhouse will be built in the near future after the Cory Trust decided in January to increase its offer of funding the Stanford Rec Project from £87,500 to £227,500. Clearly this is fantastic news which will be digested and analysed by the SRGUG Committee before further steps are taken. |

Mini rugby developed out of the need to introduce children to rugby at an early age - but without complex rules or inappropriate physical contact. Mini Rugby is designed to introduce children to the basics of the game safely, and in line with their physical abilities at their own pace – teaching them the key skills of ball handling, passing, evasion and teamwork. Boys and girls play together and on an equal footing throughout these age groups.
A summary of how the Mini age groups are structured is detailed below

Under 7s & Under 8s
At this age group the game is a form of non contact rugby, the main aim is just to develop basic ball skills and key themes such as passing backwards, catching a pass, running into space and avoiding contact. (And scoring tries! ). The players wear a belt with 2 tags attached by Velcro. A tackle is made when a member of the opposition removes a tag from the ball carriers belt. Thus this type of rugby is known as ‘Tag’.
Games are usually 7 per side. Once tackled the player must immediately stop and pass the ball. There is no kicking and there are no scrummages or lineouts at this age group.
At U8, the laws are identical to U7 to give children the chance to develop their ball skills further. Whilst the rules are the same, the difference between games at U8 and U7 are that the children have had a year longer in the schools environment - their levels of maturity, concentration and confidence is higher. Therefore each team may have possession restricted to 6 tackles
Under 9s & Under 10s
Under 9 rugby is where full contact tackling is introduced for the first time, together with rucks, mauls, 2 man lineouts and 3-man scrummages, although the scrummages and lineouts are uncontested. There is still no kicking at this age group. Usual tackle, ruck and maul laws apply, and games are 9 per side. It is at this age group that the distinction between forwards and backs begins. The games increase from 7 minutes to 10 minutes each way.
Under 10s sees the introduction of contested scrummages and line-outs - but still no kicking.
Under 11s & Under 12s
The main changes at U11 are the introduction of second rows to the scrum, the scrum now becomes 5 players not 3. The games now become 12 per side, line-outs can contain up to 4 players, tactical kicking is introduced in a limited form. The Laws of the game follow nearly all those of the Senior game. There are also kick-offs, conversions and free-kicks. The games increase from 10 minutes to 15 minutes each way.
As with the differences between the U7's and U8's the games for U12 are the same as for the U11, the only difference being the players are probably more technically proficient, bigger faster & stronger!
Mixing of Age Grades
The Continuum is unequivocal in its direction regarding the mixing of age groups or players from different age groups. Basically where separate age groups exist, players should play within them and, in most circumstances, playing up or down age groups is prohibited. We are required to abide by the Continuum and we ask parents of more able players to respect this policy and the need to develop all of the team.
